Redeemed: A Father’s Love sold out three theatres at Carib 5 at 6 p.m. on a Monday night in Kingston. They added an 8:40 p.m. screening the same night.
The Jamaica Observer reported the sold-out premiere on 6 August. Demand spilled into the Ultra and VIP screens. A later 10 August piece is the same night from inside the room: laughs, gasps, people talking in the lobby after.
The film is a Jamaican faith-based crime drama. Executive producer Reverend Dr Otis Manning told the Observer the idea sat with him until he was ready, then co-producer Jacinth Headlam walked him through the work. Luc Stephen directed. The billed cast includes Malik Yoba, Juliet “Julie Mango” Bodley, Safaree Samuels, Headlam, Michael Nicholson, Justin Awn, Cornelius Grant, Prince Saj and Charmaine Fenton. The Observer recorded church communities in the house, and gospel names Kevin Downswell and Petra Kaye on the carpet.
Ahead of the premiere, the Observer also reported seven nominations at the Caribbean Film Awards. The awarding body has not published a full category list that we could find, so seven is the Observer’s figure.
Manning told the Observer the film was produced out of pocket with church-community support. He is asking government and private capital to take Jamaican film more seriously. A sold-out Monday at Cross Roads shows there is an audience. It does not, by itself, fund the next film.
What this means. The premiere proved there is an audience. The business question is the second week. A holdover depends on the cinema seeing steady sales after opening night, and opening-night buzz fades within days. Showtimes people can find, stills and short clips people can forward, and dates already booked are what carry a film into week two.
What to do. If you are releasing a film, or sponsoring one, agree second-week dates with the cinema before the premiere. Cut stills and short clips while the film is still in post, so they are ready the morning after. Publish showtimes in one place and point every post to it. When you cite awards, quote the source until the awarding body publishes its own list.
