Meta Lets AI Agents Set Up WhatsApp Business via MCP

Meta has launched WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, a Model Context Protocol server that lets AI coding agents set up and manage WhatsApp Business Platform work through chat. TechCrunch reported the announcement on 15 September 2026. Meta’s developer docs list the server for discovering businesses and accounts, onboarding and registering phone numbers, managing message templates, configuring webhooks, and sending messages. Agents such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, and ChatGPT are in the pitch; Meta says the server is currently discoverable on Claude, Codex, and ChatGPT, with a gradual rollout.

The practical change is less tab-hopping. Instead of bouncing between Developer Console, Business Manager, API docs, and an editor, a developer signs in with Meta, scopes which businesses the agent may touch, and describes the setup. Reported jobs include creating a WhatsApp Business Account, adding and verifying a phone number (OTP), registering Cloud API access, drafting templates and checking approval status, and wiring webhooks for test traffic. Meta’s separate Social Technologies MCP still covers Graph API discovery and documentation.

Coverage from Social Media Today and others frames this as easier WhatsApp automation for marketers. The sharper read from Meta and TechCrunch is developer tooling: AI agents doing onboarding and configuration, not a finished always-on sales bot for every shop. Multiple reports also stress early access and setup/testing use, not a substitute for production sending, consent records, or a shared inbox.

What this means. For Jamaican and Caribbean brands that already want WhatsApp API, this can shorten the painful first week of accounts, numbers, templates, and webhooks — if your developer stack can speak MCP and Meta has enabled the server on your account. It does not remove Business Manager policy, template approval, or quality ratings. Non-technical teams still need a developer or a BSP; chatting with an agent is not the same as running customer messaging at scale.

What to do. If you are building or rebuilding WhatsApp Business API access this month, check Meta’s MCP documentation for WhatsApp Business Tools availability on your Meta account, and try one scoped setup (number + one template + webhook test) before you grant broad write access. Keep human review on anything that sends to customers. Last fact-checked 17 September 2026.
