Google has published a Demand Gen playbook it calls the YouTube Performance Four: data strength, conversion volume, AI targeting, and creative variety. The Help Center page frames it as the blueprint for conversions on Demand Gen campaigns that run on YouTube.
Google’s own claim is blunt. Advertisers who adopted at least three of the four practices saw, on average, more than 40% more conversions and about 30% higher conversion value. That figure is Google internal data, global, April 2024 to December 2025. Treat it as Google’s number, not an independent audit of Jamaican accounts.
Data strength is measurement first. Google wants accurate signals into the AI: Google Tag Gateway with PII where allowed, or offline imports with key identifiers such as GCLID, PII, IP, transaction ID, or gbraid/wbraid. It also pushes linking Google Analytics and Ads, sitewide tagging, and feeding CRM or other offline sources through Data Manager. Engaged Views on YouTube often convert without a click, so weak identity signals leave those conversions dark to the bidder.
Conversion volume is how much fuel the algorithm gets. Google says pick efficiency bidding (Target CPA or Target ROAS) or volume bidding (Maximize Conversions or Maximize Conversion Value), and set budgets that can actually buy the volume: about US$100 a day or more for Maximize strategies, or at least 10× target CPA for Target strategies. Do not judge a campaign still in Learning. Wait for about 50 conversions. When you do change bids or budgets, move them slowly — Google’s 15% rule is no more than about 5–10% a week, and not more than 15%.
AI targeting is Optimized Targeting on prospecting, seeded with first-party lists when you have them. Remarketing stays for people who already know the brand. New customer acquisition goals push the model toward net-new buyers. The cold-start problem is real on small Caribbean accounts; a seed list beats an empty audience box.
Creative variety is the part most local YouTube buyers underbuild. Google’s benchmark for a Demand Gen ad is at least three images in each of vertical, square, and horizontal, plus one video in each of those three shapes, run across available surfaces rather than one channel lock. Refresh by adding assets before you yank winners. Pause losers only after about 14 days. ABCD still applies: attention, branding, connection, direction.
Campaign structure follows the same logic. Google AI learns at the campaign level, so fragmenting “baseball” and “football” into separate campaigns starves the model. Merge ad groups that cannot clear about 30 conversions in 30 days. Keep remarketing creatives in their own ad group if you need tailored messaging, but do not carve the account into dust.
What this means. For Jamaican and wider Caribbean advertisers, this is not a new product launch. It is Google telling you Demand Gen will not perform if measurement is broken, budgets are too thin for Learning, targeting has no seed, or the creative set is one landscape video and a prayer. Tourism, rum, festivals, fintech, and professional services that buy YouTube through Kingston or Miami agencies hit the same four walls. The Performance Four is a checklist. Accounts that skip two of them are arguing with the machine that spends the money.

What to do. Open each live Demand Gen campaign today and score it against the four: tags and offline signals connected; enough budget and conversions to exit Learning; Optimized Targeting or remarketing set on purpose; full image and video shape coverage. Fix the lowest score first. If you only have bandwidth for one change this week, fix measurement before you raise spend. Last fact-checked 16 September 2026.
