Jamaica Environent Trust- JET
Since 1991, the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) has lived its mission to protect Jamaica’s natural resources using education, advocacy and the law to influence individual and organizational behaviour and public policy and practice. Over the last 30 years JET has delivered a wide range of projects and advocacy
campaigns over the years including school-based and public education initiatives, cleanups, environmental competitions and awards ceremonies, as well as legal actions to protect the rights of Jamaican citizens to a clean and healthy environment. JET has also produced numerous publications on various environmental topics and issues; including the most recent “Red-Dirt: A Multidisciplinary Review of the Bauxite-Alumina Industry in Jamaica” which can be found on JET’s website www.jamentrust.org.
Despite the challenges faced due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 which did curtail field work, JET continued to carry out environmental education projects – our longstanding Schools’ Environment
Programme (SEP) and the national coordination of International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). Unfortunately, JET was unable to host our flagship annual beach cleanup on the Palisadoes Strip in Kingston, due to the pandemic. Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica (NDUJ) wrapped up activities in March 2020 after NDUJ Road Trip pop-up events in Montego Bay and Kingston.
JET’s environmental law and advocacy programme continues to receive support from the Jamaica Conservation Partners and we have continued our work on the protection of Cockpit Country. We were still able to continue work for our Better Beaches for Jamaicans (BBFJ) project through limited beach visits.
Two new animated public service announcements were released under BBFJ in 2020. JET has also worked to keep beach conservation and management issues on the national agenda.
Esirom’s contribution will support JET’s efforts to protect Jamaica’s natural resources in 2021.
Open Broadcaster Software – OBS
Open Broadcaster Software is a free open source tool that creators use to broadcast their content to the world through livestreams and recordings. It allows users to capture video from a variety of sources, such as cameras and computer screens, and composite them together into professional-looking productions that are used to entertain, teach, and inspire.
The contributions by Esirom are used to help compensate developers, cover ongoing server and hardware costs, attend industry events and more.
Earth Hour
Earth Hour is the single, largest, symbolic mass participation event in the world. Born out of a hope that we could mobilize people to take action on climate change, Earth Hour now inspires a global community of millions of people across 152 countries and territories to switch lights off for an hour as a massive show of concern for the environment.
We will put on a free concert to inspire Jamaicans to take action against climate change. We hope to start a movement locally that is already taking place all around the world. With the help of our artists you can experience performances while participating in Earth Hour at 8:30 PM when all power is turned off and sky lanterns light up the night.
We hope that more companies locally will participate in the fight against climate change and spread the word about this movement.
Friends of the Blue Mountains
The Jamaica Conservation Development Trust is part-funded by the Government of Jamaica and relies on grants and donations to finance the park management programme; which includes reforestation, invasive species control, trail and recreational site maintenance along with public education in buffer communities.
Esirom is playing its part by being a corporate sponsor annually donating $100,000 through the Friends of the Blue Mountains programme which contributes to the management and maintenance of the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park. We also use the cabin facilities to host our annual staff retreat.
